Hundreds of Carthaginians turned out for the 2024 Homecoming and Family Weekend, filling the fall air with Firebird spirit.
Held on campus Oct. 4-6, the celebration renewed popular traditions like the biennial Beacon Awards. The Alumni Council created this award program to recognize Carthage alumni who provide light to their communities.

Three accomplished graduates were honored during this year’s Alumni and Family Brunch:
John McGinty Jr. ’72 received the Beacon Award for professional achievement. He has dedicated his career to healthcare leadership, transforming institutions and improving patient care across the country.
Lauren Hansen ’10, M.Ed. ’15, received the Beacon Award for personal achievement. She is a natural storyteller, a compassionate connector, and a leader whose heart for service has impacted countless lives.
Matthew Richer ’14 received the Beacon Award for young alumni outstanding achievement. He is a dedicated attorney, service member, and mentor who has used his talents to serve both his community and country.
“I want to thank each of our 2024 Beacon Award recipients — John, Lauren, and Matthew — for the work you’ve done in your communities, and for demonstrating to our fellow Firebirds what it means to be a Carthaginian,” President John Swallow said in his remarks.
Homecoming and Family Weekend 2024 included a pregame tailgate party.Carthage, which recently reached a major milestone by topping 25,000 alumni, hosted two targeted reunions. The Class of 1974 celebrated 50 years since graduation, while Black alumni gathered to reminisce under the theme “Ignite the Night.”
Participants got the chance to see student competitors and artists at work, including in a sold-out performance of the musical “Xanadu.” The jam-packed weekend schedule also included annual staples like a parade down Campus Drive, a 5K run, a worship service, a concert showcasing student ensembles, and a pregame tailgate party leading up to the first Homecoming game under new football coach Matt Popino.
Two alumni went beyond the spectator seats. Touring comedians Dana Ehrmann ’15 and Robert Dortch ’18 returned to campus to share their talents in a show that drew plenty of laughs.
Drawing a parallel between the weekend’s large turnout and the College’s consistently strong enrollment, President Swallow urged attendees to help sustain this momentum.
“In the times ahead, we need this pride that we’re all feeling about Carthage to translate to an even higher level of loyalty and support,” he said. “This is not the time to stand on the sidelines. This is the time to be part of what’s happening.”
Fans packed the home stands at Art Keller Field for the 2024 Homecoming football game against Elmhurst.
